| Description | Licorice (scientific name: Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch), also known as Guolao, sweet grass, Ural licorice or sweet root, is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Glycyrrhiza of the family Fabaceae. Its roots and rhizomes are thick and sturdy, which serve as the medicinal parts. The medicinal root is cylindrical, 25–100 cm in length and 0.6–3.5 cm in diameter, with outer bark of varying tightness and a reddish-brown or grayish-brown surface. The rhizome is cylindrical as well, with bud scars on the surface and pith in the central part of the cross-section. It has a faint odor and a characteristic sweet taste. |
