Machining and ProcessingIn the mechanical manufacturing industry, most metal components and parts require some form of machining during the manufacturing process. Metal machining is the most widespread metal-shaping process which involves cutting metals to small pieces. Similar to the machining of other types of mateirals, a power-driven machine tool shapes a piece of metal into an intended design by removing the unnecessary parts. There are different types of metal machining technologies, such as thermal cutting, erosion machining technologies, CNC machining, etc. Thermal cutting is commonly used in engineering practice to obtain the final shape of structural components. It includes oxy-fuel, plasma and laser cut technologies. For example, the oxy-fuel cutting process is used to cut material that reacts with oxygen by heating the material to a kindling temperature first, and then burning the material away in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. CNC Machining is a process used in the manufacturing sector that involves the use of computers to control machine tools. The commonly controlled tools in this manner include lathes, mills, routers and grinders. A computer program is customized for an object and the machines are programmed. With CNC machining, the computer can control exact positioning and velocity.
