| Description | PDMS, short for polydimethylsiloxane, is an organic polymer commonly used for prototyping microfluidic chips. It is inherently elastic, transparent, breathable, and chemically inert. It is suitable for the fabrication of chips used in cell culture, drug screening, cell trapping, and related applications. The material is hydrophobic by nature and can be surface-modified through chemical or physical methods. |
| Applications | Suitable for cell culture and co-culture, drug screening and toxicity evaluation, droplet generation and emulsification, chemical synthesis and analysis, and cell capture/sorting in microfluidic experimental workflows; these chips serve as the foundational platform most widely adopted in life sciences, medical diagnostics, and drug R&D. |
| Features | Its exceptional optical transparency facilitates imaging and microscopy, enabling real-time imaging and monitoring of microfluidic cell culture chambers; the manufacturing process is highly standardized and straightforward. Unlike thermoplastic materials, PDMS can be easily bonded to create seals and form enclosed channels; PDMS chips are typically fabricated by pouring a liquid premix onto a master mold. This casting process can even imprint the finest features (as small as a few micrometers) onto PDMS across a wide range of aspect ratios; PDMS is a biocompatible material, ensuring its neutrality in biological applications and making it a suitable choice for cell culture substrates; PDMS has a relatively low elastic modulus that can be easily adjusted by modifying the curing agent ratio, thereby offering a wide range of material stiffness. There are also methods to adjust the electrical and thermal properties of PDMS microfluidic chips; PDMS is a breathable material, which gives it an advantage in long-term cell culture. |
